GNC Recognizes Anatabloc® as a Top Vendor of 2012

Anatabloc® was recently selected as a recipient of the annual GNC Top Vendor Awards.  Specifically, Anatabloc® was recognized by GNC as the Wellness Winner in the category of Best Product Innovation for 2012.  The award recipients were announced via GNC’s social media outlets and were recognized at the 2013 Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus, Ohio, in February.

Anatabloc® was chosen to receive the award based on several criteria, including: success in bringing a product into a mature, competitive category; success in establishing the product with effective marketing, sampling, and trial drivers; and success in becoming a best-selling new product.

“We could not ask for a better partner than GNC,” stated David Dean , Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Star Scientific, Inc. “The growth of Anatabloc® and increase in awareness of the product over the past year could not have happened without the support of GNC.  We are honored to have been chosen for this award.”

Tom Dowd , Executive Vice President, Chief Merchandising Officer & General Manager of GNC, stated, “Sales of Anatabloc® continue to surpass our expectations.  We are proud to recognize Star Scientific and Anatabloc® with the 2012 GNC Top Vendor Award for Best Product Innovation in the Wellness category.”

Recently, the Company increased the number of lozenges/tablets in both Anatabloc® and Anatabloc® Unflavored from 200 to 300, an increase of 50% over the former quantity.  This change was made after researchers for the Company developed a new recommended usage of the products based on body weight.  The weight classification and usage recommendation chart is now displayed on Anatabloc® packaging and on the Anatabloc® website (www.anatabloc.com).  The transition from the 200-count to the 300-count bottle will be complete in all GNC stores during the month of April.

Star Scientific Reports Publication of First Peer-Reviewed Article on the Effects of Anatabine in an Animal Model of Multiple Sclerosis

GLEN ALLEN, Va., Jan. 31, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Star Scientific, Inc. (STSI) today announces publication of the first peer-reviewed article examining the effects of anatabine in a mouse model of the debilitating autoimmune and neurodegenerative disease multiple sclerosis (MS). The study, conducted by the Company’s research partner, The Roskamp Institute, was designed to determine whether anatabine had beneficial effects on the development of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) in mice, which is a standard mouse model of MS. Some of the findings were previously presented at Neuroscience 2012, an international scientific convention; however, the article in PLOS ONE contains complete results of the study, and the article was subjected to the peer review evaluation process prior to publication.

The Roskamp researchers found that orally administered anatabine significantly reduced neurological disability and improved motor coordination of EAE mice. In particular, paralysis of the hind limbs was markedly suppressed in the anatabine treated group, and neurological symptoms were delayed in the anatabine treated group compared to the placebo group.

The study results also showed that anatabine supplementation resulted in suppression of several pro-inflammatory molecules (cytokines) in the blood and in the spleen of the EAE mice. The observed reduction in the levels of several inflammatory molecules provides evidence that the experimental autoimmune process has been reduced. Anatabine also significantly suppressed STAT3 and NF-kB activation in the spleen and the brain of the EAE mice. These two intracellular transcription factors (proteins) regulate a large array of inflammatory genes including cytokines, suggesting a mechanism by which anatabine antagonizes pro-inflammatory cytokine production.

In addition, the researchers found that anatabine reduced the infiltration of inflammatory cells in the brain and significantly prevented demyelination in the spinal cord of EAE mice. In humans, demyelination in the spinal cord is associated with muscle weakness and paralysis in MS. Therefore, the researchers concluded that the “data suggest that anatabine may be effective in the treatment of MS.”
Dr. Michael Mullan, President and CEO of the Roskamp Institute, commented, “The most remarkable results were the clear inhibition of brain inflammation and the degeneration of the spinal cord by anatabine and the accompanying inhibition of the severe paralysis that usually accompanied the model.”

Dr. Daniel Paris, the primary author of the article and Head of Research and Development at the Roskamp Institute, added, “The oral administration of anatabine potently reduced the neurological deficits and abrogated the pathological lesions in the spinal cord that are responsible for the development of paralysis in this mouse model of multiple sclerosis (MS). In addition our work also explains the beneficial activity of anatabine in this MS model by showing that this compound prevents the activation of key molecules that orchestrate the propagation of inflammation in the central nervous system and the periphery.”

The full title of the study is, “Amelioration of Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis by Anatabine,” and can be viewed here: http://dx.plos.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0055392. This study builds upon earlier research conducted by the Roskamp Institute, which showed that the natural alkaloid anatabine displays anti-inflammatory properties and readily crosses the blood brain barrier, suggesting it could represent an important compound for mitigating many types of neuro-inflammatory conditions.

Star Scientific, Inc./Rock Creek Pharmaceuticals Report Positive Initial Results of ASAP Human Thyroid Health Study Showing Benefits in Immune System Support

GLEN ALLEN, Va., Jan. 7, 2013 /PRNewswire/ – Star Scientific, Inc. (NASDAQ: STSI) announced today the preliminary results of the Company’s ASAP (Anatabloc Supplementation Autoimmune Prevention) Human Thyroid Study that analyzes the impact of anatabine dietary supplementation on thyroid health.

The study is a three-month, five-visit, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of the impact of anatabine dietary supplementation in humans with autoimmune disease of the thyroid.  The study was conducted at nine sites and builds upon previous epidemiological and animal experimental studies.  Initial results for all study subjects suggest that dietary supplementation with anatabine ameliorates the immune system’s targeting of the thyroid gland in autoimmune thyroiditis.

Subjects in the study were screened initially to establish the presence of active autoimmune thyroid inflammation.  Baseline thyroid sonography, thyroid antibody levels, and cytokine levels were collected from the subjects who were determined to have active autoimmune thyroid inflammation.  Thyroid function tests and routine safety monitoring were also done in these subjects.  Eligible subjects were enrolled in the study and then received weight-appropriate doses of anatabine or placebo, ranging from nine to twenty-four mg of the anatabine supplement or placebo per day.  Subjects received treatment for three months, returning at four-week intervals for repeat laboratory testing and/or sonography of the thyroid.

One-hundred forty-eight subjects completed the study, of which one-hundred forty six complied with all treatment, visits and required tests.  The preliminary examination of the primary outcomes shows a clear and statistically significant difference in the treated group as compared to the placebo group by the end of the trial, with declines in anti-thyroglobulin antibody levels.  Anatabine subjects also tended toward a reduction in thyroid gland vascularity on ultrasound relative to placebo.

The full report of the study is still being completed and will soon be submitted for peer review.  Therefore, it is unavailable at this time.  However, these promising initial results promptedCurtis Wright , MD, MPH, Medical Director of Rock Creek Pharmaceuticals, to comment, “It is remarkable that dietary supplementation is able to help lower the thyroid antibody activity.  To see antibodies that may have been elevated for years beginning to come down in a significant way after three months of supplementation is exciting.  Given the rate of decline over three months, it is quite reasonable to expect that the effect may continue with longer use, which has already been observed in individual cases.  I look forward to following subjects over a longer period in order to establish how profound and clinically meaningful the effect is going to be.  The thyroglobulin levels in some patients returned entirely to normal in this three month study.”

Dr. Paul Ladenson , senior endocrinological consultant for the study, stated, “Data from this rigorously conducted, placebo-controlled, double blind trial show that anatabine-treated subjects had progressive decreases in circulating thyroglobulin antibody levels, which became significant by the end of the trial.  Current treatment for autoimmune thyroiditis is limited to end-stage disease when irreversible gland damage necessitates lifelong thyroid hormone replacement.  The prospect of a novel nutritional or pharmaceutical intervention that could preserve thyroid health represents an encouraging advance.  Further clinical studies are now warranted.”

The title of the study is, “A Multi-Site, Double-Blind, Randomized, Placebo-Controlled, Parallel-Group Trial to Evaluate the Safety and Potential Effects of the Dietary Supplement Anatabine on Antithyroid Autoantibodies and Thyroid Function in Subjects with Autoimmune Thyroiditis”.  The full study report will be available after all secondary analyses have been completed and is planned to be submitted for scientific presentation and publication later in the year.

Star Scientific Announces Tennis Pro John Isner, ATP #1 Ranked US Player, as Second Brand Ambassador for Anatabloc®

Star Scientific, Inc. (STSI), today announced that John Isner, the top-ranked American player on the ATP World Tour, will be the next brand ambassador for the Company’s Anatabloc® dietary supplement for anti‐inflammatory support. Isner is the second brand ambassador for Anatabloc®, joining PGA Tour champion Fred Couples.

Since the start of his professional career in 2007, after completing four years at the University of Georgia, Isner has been recognized as one of the rising stars of American tennis.  Some of Isner’s accomplishments include winning five ATP tour titles, leading the United States to the 2012 Davis Cup semifinal, winning the longest match in tennis history at Wimbledon in 2010, defeating world #1 Novak Djokovic and former world #1 Roger Federer during the first half of the 2012 season, and reaching the quarterfinals of the 2012 London Olympics.  Isner also broke into the ATP top 10 during the 2012 season and is often considered a future Grand Slam contender.

Isner recently learned about the benefits of Anatabloc® and started using the supplement to help provide anti-inflammatory support naturally.  “Anatabloc has allowed me to stay on the court longer and in the gym longer, while at the same time helping with the recovery process.  I simply do not feel as sore and fatigued as I have in the past,” Isner stated.

“We are extremely proud to have John teaming up with Anatabloc®, a product that is becoming increasingly popular in the world of professional athletics,” said Isner’s manager, Sam Duvall, Vice President at Lagardere Unlimited Tennis.

“John is a phenomenal athlete who has become a giant in the world of tennis,” stated David Dean, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Star Scientific, Inc. “He will be a tremendous partner for Star Scientific as he helps spread the word about Anatabloc®, and the difference it is making in his game. We are excited to have him as an Anatabloc® brand ambassador. Sales continue to grow and we are looking forward to a great year ahead.”

Isner’s decision to become an Anatabloc® brand ambassador coincides with the Company’s results of testing from HFL Sport Science, one of the leading organizations in doping control and research. HFL Sport Science batch tested Anatabloc® for the presence of a wide range of more than 147 prohibited substances using HFL’s ISO17025 accredited nutritional supplement screens. The testing found Anatabloc® to contain no banned substances.

PGA Tour Professional Fred Couples, the Company’s first Anatabloc® Brand Ambassador, continues in his role as a principal spokesman for the product, and is excited to see Anatabloc® growing and spreading into different areas of professional athletics.  Couples will be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2013 and will serve as Captain of The 2013 Presidents Cup.

Paul L. Perito, Chairman, COO, and President of Star Scientific, Inc. commented, “We are proud to have both Fred and John on board. We are hopeful that their success with the product will encourage other athletes and active individuals to try Anatabloc® and spread the word.  Now that HFL Sport Science has concluded its vigorous testing of Anatabloc®, we look forward to expanding our presence and helping all types of athletes and active individuals reach their full potential.”

Anatabloc® can be purchased at GNC Stores nationwide, and at www.GNC.com and www.anatabloc.com.

Roskamp Institute Reports Beneficial Effects of Nutritional Supplementation with Anatabine in an Animal Model of Multiple Sclerosis

GLEN ALLEN, Va., May 8, 2012/PRNewswire/ — Star Scientific, Inc. (NASDAQ: CIGX) through its wholly owned subsidiary, Rock Creek Pharmaceuticals Inc., announces that it has received important new research findings from its research partner, The Roskamp Institute ofSarasota, Florida. The Institute has completed a successful animal study of nutritional supplementation with Rock Creek’s specially formulated anatabine (patent pending), in an animal model of multiple sclerosis. The Roskamp Institute has previously reported on a successful study in a mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease using nutritional supplementation with a specially formulated version of Anatabloc® (patent pending).

In this report, entitled “Preliminary results of the treatment of a mouse model of Multiple Sclerosis with anatabine,” the researchers at Roskamp describe how they assessed the effects of nutritional supplementation of the animal’s diet with an animal formulation of anatabine in EAE (experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis). This condition is induced by vaccinating mice with myelin which induces an autoimmune reaction. As a consequence, there is a severe inflammatory process in the brain, which has the effect of destroying neurons and causing progressive paralysis. In this regard, the disease model looks very similar to that which occurs in human multiple sclerosis. Dietary supplementation with anatabine resulted in a dramatic reduction in the rate of paralysis of hind limbs [see figure 1].
Hind Limb Paralysis

In addition to the better motor performance of the mice, there was evidence of suppression of the normal inflammatory response that accompanies neuronal destruction in this model. In the affected animals that did not receive supplementation with an anatabine formulation, the spleen pro-inflammatory molecules, such as IFN-gamma, IL-8, IL-6 and TNF-alpha (which are all significantly raised by the induction of inflammation), were markedly elevated relative to control animals. In the mice that received the anatabine supplement, these inflammatory molecules were all reduced to normal levels [see figure 2]. These preliminary data all suggest the company’s specially formulated anatabine supplement has a highly beneficial effect in this model of MS.

The report is available on the Roskamp Institute website at http://www.rfdn.org/ms_anatabine.html.

“These are encouraging results that show biological activity in a relevant animal model,” said Dr. Curtis Wright, Senior Vice President and Medical Director of Rock Creek Pharmaceuticals. “Roskamp has shown that supplementing the diet of the test mice with an animal version of our specially formulated human anatabine product interfered with the myelin injections triggering the autoimmunity and inflammation that cause the paralysis. Not only did they show a reduction, prevention or delay in paralysis, but they showed a reduction in pro-inflammatory markers as well. The placebo mice rapidly developed inflammation and paralysis; the mice receiving anatabine dietary supplementation were less severely affected.”

Rock Creek Pharmaceuticals and the Roskamp Institute have worked collaboratively on research relating to the company’s anatabine compound for a number of years, occasioned by the Institute’s interest in the effect of the compound on immune system support and inflammation in the nervous system. Inflammation and the proper or aberrant functioning of the immune system is a critical factor in a number of neurological disorders studied by the Institute, and using nutritional means in helping the immune system regain its natural balance is one path toward supporting current medical treatments for such conditions.

Paul L. Perito, Rock Creek’s Chairman and CEO stated, “We continue to be impressed by the creative scientific insights and progress of the research team headed by Michael Mullan MD, PhD, along with his colleagues Drs. Crawford and Paris at the Roskamp Institute. We look forward to the development of this encouraging hypothesis and the initiation of human clinical trials when appropriate.”

PGA TOUR PROFESSIONAL FRED COUPLES NAMED BRAND AMBASSADOR FOR ANATABLOC®

Couples Says Breakthrough Product for Anti-inflammatory Support
Makes Him Feel Better

Rock Creek Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a subsidiary of Star Scientific, Inc. (NASDAQ: CIGX), today announced that PGA Tour professional, Fred Couples, is the company’s first Brand Ambassador for Anatabloc®, its breakthrough product for anti-inflammatory support. Couples is a 32-year veteran of the PGA Tour, with over 50 professional tournament wins including the Masters (1992), and has been twice named the PGA Tour Player of the Year (1991, 1992).

Fred Couples, Anatabloc Brand Ambassador“I started taking Anatabloc®, and within a few days, I simply started feeling better,” said Couples. “There has been a difference in how I feel, both when I wake up in the morning and throughout my day. Anatabloc® was an amazing find for me and I continue to feel better.”

Introduced in August 2011, Anatabloc® is a dietary supplement that assists the body’s natural process for regulating inflammation using an alkaloid found in plants and vegetables, combined with Vitamins A and D3 to assist in maintaining healthy levels of inflammation. Excessive inflammation is associated with a variety of autoimmune conditions, as well as athletic and work-out injuries. Anatabloc® is now available through GNC.com.

“We discovered from golf legend Fred Couples that he had been taking Anatabloc® and we were delighted to hear he was feeling great and seeing real results,” said David Dean, Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Star Scientific.  “Given his stature and popularity on and off the course, it made absolute sense to ask him to join our team as a Brand Ambassador. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Couples’ win at the Masters and he will be playing in the Tournament. To be in the game at this level and playing this long is an amazing accomplishment.” Dean added. Couples will wear the Anatabloc® logo on his sleeve at all tournaments going forward.

Couples announced his partnership with Anatabloc® and his use of the anti-inflammatory supplement at the Northern Trust Open—a tournament he almost won in 2011—at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, CA.

“Anatabloc® should enable millions of Americans, like Fred, to be more active by maintaining a healthy level of inflammation,” said Jonnie Williams Sr., Chief Executive Officer, Star Scientific. “Other professional athletes such as NFL All-Star Jeremy Shockey and tennis stars Jimmy Arias, Aaron Krickstein, Rob Seguso and legendary coach Nick Bollettierri are already using Anatabloc™ and talking about how it is changing their careers as well. We want everyone to know there is a new way to deal with the aches and pains associated with excessive inflammation, and the answer is Anatabloc®,” he added.

“I hope my story will let millions of Americans know that Anatabloc® may be an answer in helping them return to an active lifestyle,” said Couples.

Star Scientific Reports First Peer-Reviewed Article on Anatabine and Alzheimer’s Disease by Roskamp Institute

GLEN ALLEN, Va., Oct. 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Star Scientific, Inc. (Nasdaq: CIGX) reports today the publication of the first peer-reviewed article on the in-vitro and in-vivo activity of anatabine in Alzheimer’s Disease. The article is authored by scientists at the Roskamp Institute and is electronically published in the European Journal of Pharmacology (2011 Sept 19).  It states that anatabine lowers Alzheimer’s A-beta production in-vitro and in-vivo.

In the article the authors describe the accumulation of an abnormal substance, called A-beta, the substance that leads to amyloid formation and damage to brain tissue. They studied the formation of A-beta and showed how anatabine lowers levels of two forms of A-beta (1-40 and 1-42) in a dose-dependent manner, possibly by preventing or reducing formation from the precursor protein. After showing the activity in the test tube, the researchers went on to show that when anatabine is given to mice vulnerable to accumulation of amyloid, treatment with anatabine lowers brain levels of both A-beta (1-40) and A-beta (1-42), postulated to be due to effects on NFKB activation. Michael Mullan, MD, Ph.D.,  Roskamp Institute co-director and one of the article’s authors, commented, “This paper demonstrates anatabine’s potential as an anti-inflammatory agent and shows it may have broad applications including for disorders like Alzheimer’s Disease.”

Anatabine citrate is one of the active ingredients in Anatabloc®, a dietary supplement developed by Star Scientific’s subsidiary Rock Creek Pharmaceuticals.  Anatabloc®, which entered the market on August 30,  is designed to provide anti-inflammatory support (www.anatabloc.com).  Curtis Wright, MD, MPH, Senior Vice President of Rock Creek Pharmaceuticals, expressed his opinion of the Roskamp findings. “While we were aware that Roskamp was conducting studies of the effects of dietary supplementation with anatabine in Alzheimer’s Disease, it is gratifying that external peer review validated the work they have done. The research confirms that this natural plant compound shows an interesting regulatory effect on brain immune responses. It is one thing to believe your own results; it is quite another to have them accepted by your peers in the scientific community.”  Anatabine for the Roskamp research was provided through Rock Creek Pharmaceuticals.

Ongoing human clinical studies of anatabine citrate and the commercial product Anatabloc® are examining the potential role of nutritional supplementation in regulating low-level inflammation controlled by the NFκB system.
